As you probably noticed, we did not post a new newsletter last week since the week was so short. When we have 2 or 3 day week, we won’t always post a new one unless there is some important news to tell.  

       Thank you to all of the parents/grandparents/aunts who came on the field trip to Quarry Hill on Wednesday. We were very impressed with the science lessons that the groups participated in and we plan to extend what we learned there into our regular science classes for the next few weeks.     

        The Lopez family will be bringing in a hot lunch for the K-3rd grade students on Friday, October 23rd. They always have lots of options so I’m sure that everyone will love their lunch! FYI, no one has signed up for a hot lunch in November, so if you would like to volunteer, please let Mrs. Hansen know, or go to the Hot Lunch Sign-Up and let us know! 

       School picture day is Thursday, October 29th. The picture order form went home already.  You may have your child dress up and bring play clothes to change into afterward. You can send your order form in to school at any time and we will give them to the Photographer on picture day. They offer many ways to pay; from online with PayPal or Venmo, to physical cash, check, or you can fill out the credit card information on the order form. 

       As we look to next week the question always arises, “Do we do anything to celebrate Halloween at school?” We have many different families who have varying beliefs and differing family traditions, so we have chosen not to participate in anything Halloween at school. When October 31st falls on a school day, we have chosen to celebrate Reformation Day instead. Since it is on a Saturday this year, please enjoy your own family traditions at home with regard to Halloween. 

        Our first term ends on Friday, Nov. 20th, so our parent teacher conferences for K-3rd grade students will take place on Monday and Tuesday, November 23 & 24. A Sign-up Genius notice will go out to all Kindergarten through 3rd grade families to sign up for a conference time. If those dates do not suit you, please contact your child’s teacher to set up an alternate day to meet.

Mrs. Karen's Class Notes

       It has been another fun-filled week in preschool and kindergarten.  The 3 and 4 year olds worked on letter Oo and met Oscar Otter.  We talked about the circle shape and wrote letter Oo's.  We played with playdough and reviewed numbers 1, 2, and 3.  In kindergarten, we learned about the consonants /Hh/ and /Ss/ and met Homer Horse and Seabreeze Seal.  We continue to sound out consonant-vowel blends with our consonants /t, l, b, n, m, h, s/ and the vowels.  There are a LOT of 3-letter words that we can spell now!  We learned our first sight word: the.  In math, we continue to count numbers 1-20 and pennies and review the ones and teens families.  This week we learned to write number 6.  In language, we worked on the concepts first, second, third, fourth, fifth as well as front/back and old/young.  Our next poem is "The Woodpecker" by Elizabeth M. Roberts.  In art, we did apple printing last week and brought them home this week.  Our Bible story was David.  Thank you God for helping us "fight" big giants in our life.

     Our Ee Bible verse this week was:  Even a child is known by his doings. Proverbs 20.11

Mrs. Hansen's Class Notes

      Here are the spelling words for the coming week. 

• First Grade words are: cuff, puff, stuff, sniff, cross, bless, will, well, bell, doll, you, and of which practice that Ll, Ff, and Ss are often doubled at the end of short vowel words. 
• The 2nd Grade words are: crisp, split, slant, sleeve, sprint, screen, squeeze, snap, street, swift, twist, twelve, again, here, and only which practice the special sounds: cr in crab, spl in splash, sl in sleep, spr in sprain, scr in scream, squ in squeak, sn in snack, str in stream, sw in swim, and tw in twin.  
• The 3rd Grade words are: knives, leaves, shelves, yourselves, wolves, thieves, scarves, loaves, giraffes, football, scarecrow, raincoat, hayride, peanuts, pumpkins, bountiful, and orchard which practice that to form the plural form of most words ending in f or fe, change it to ves. We are also practicing fall compound words. 

       We learned so much about the kinds of seeds, the parts of plants, and what plants need to survive at our field trip to Quarry Hill, that we are going to continue to focus on it in 2nd-3rd grade science class on Wednesdays. We will come back to chapter 2 and our study on simple machines and forces after we have concluded studying plants. 

       In Bible class we learned about Moses and how God saved him as a baby so that he could later be used to rescue the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt. We talked about how Moses was shy and asked God to use someone else. I love how God gives us examples in the Bible of weak, sinful people like us, whom he uses to accomplish great things! The Bible memory verse for next week is: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
